Vinyl is one of the most versatile flooring options on the market. It’s a strong, long-lasting material that is idolized in the home improvement world for its attractive designs. Vinyl is a highly sought-after flooring option, mostly because of its functionality. It is impervious to moisture by nature, making it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.
Looking for a functional, versatile, affordable flooring option for your home? Vinyl is the answer! If you’re considering adding vinyl floors to your home, here’s what you can expect when a professional comes to install it.
Preparing the area. Any furnishings or appliances should be removed from the area. Then, the floor trim and/or molding are to be removed, along with any hardware. The old flooring will also be removed at this time. Your sub-floor may also require preparation:
- Concrete. The concrete should be clean, smooth and dry to properly apply vinyl. If there are any holes or cracks, they will be repaired. Similarly, any high spots or bumps should be smoothed over.
- Linoleum or Vinyl. If the existing floor is in good condition, new vinyl can be applied over the top. If the existing floor is worn, a coat of leveler may need to be applied. Any dry or damaged portions should be removed.
Installation. After properly cutting the vinyl sheets to fit the space and any relief cuts that might be necessary, adhesive material is spread around the perimeter of the area. Then the vinyl is laid down and pressed flat to adhere to the subfloor surface. Once the vinyl is applied, the adhesive can take 2-6 hours to cure, depending on humidity levels.
While you can tackle a vinyl flooring install on your own, the job is best left to the professionals. They’ll handle all of the prep work, safely and properly install the new vinyl, and clean up afterwards, getting rid of any old flooring or trim that was removed.
